Fuelling Safety

Understanding and complying with fuelling safety procedures when working around aircraft.

Setting the Standard

Every day tens of thousands of aircraft worldwide are fueled safely and efficiently for their next flight, thanks to the JIG Standards - the Global Benchmark for aviation fuel quality control and safe fueling operations.

FUELLING SAFETY

It is important to always comply with the safety procedures when working around an aircraft. Look out for other operations on the apron and keep a safe distance from the fuelling vehicle, fuel hoses and the fuel hydrant pit coupler.

BONDING TO THE AIRCRAFT

Before fuelling can begin, a bonding wire must be connected between fuelling equipment and the aircraft to eliminate the risk of a spark, and possibly a fire. If the link is broken, fuelling must stop before the bonding wire can be safely reconnected.

PARKING TOO CLOSE

Park service vehicles well clear of aircraft wing vents. If the aircraft fuel tanks are overfilled for any reason, fuel could flow from these vents and be ignited by a hot vehicle exhaust, causing a fire.

EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN

The emergency shutdown button stops the fuel flow throughout the airport. Access to this button must always be kept clear.

MAINTAINING A CLEAR EXIT

Fuelling vehicles must always have a clear forward exit path. No other vehicle or obstacle should be in their way.

HALTING FUEL FLOW

Releasing the Deadman control stops fuel flow to the aircraft, and pulling the lanyard cuts off fuel flow from the hydrant.

KEEPING A SAFE DISTANCE

Keep clear of fuelling areas and equipment. Do not attempt to restart stalled service vehicles such as baggage handling and catering supply trucks as this could cause an ignition spark.
